State of the College of Engineering

By Admin

Each year the College of Engineering contributes 1% of engineering graduates in the country. This year the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) adopted a new admission policy that was designed to admit the best students in the University. UPD’s no-show rate among Freshmen is almost 40% while it’s only 5% for our College. Thus, 900 out of 2800 or 1/3 of UPD’s Freshmen are Engineering students.

The past year has been an excellent year for the College. Our graduates are still the #1 choice of employees of industry. We are gaining ground on relevant research as more government agencies and private companies are engaging the services of our researchers and faculty consultants. The faculty members have taken on the challenge of solving local problems from an engineering vantage. Our alumni came through in the College’s effort to modernize its infrastructure. We are launching a 2-year fund raising campaign to strengthen the faculty complement of the College through the UPAE Centennial Hall naming rights.

The College of Engineering has 9 Departments, 5 Centers, 12 undergraduate programs, 24 graduate programs, 168 (50 PhD, 70 MS) full-time and 40 (9 PhD, 24 MS) part-time faculty members, 3913 undergraduate students, 700 graduate students, 46% of the student population are female, 31 student organizations, 4 buildings with a 5th building under construction.

The three most important ingredients of and academic institution are its students, faculty and curriculum. In the past two years, 7 of the 9 Departments have finished reviewing their curriculum and instituting revisions to update their curriculum and make it relevant to industry to complement the goals of our country. All the degree programs now have a senior project that will integrate the knowledge and skills of our students into relevant research project. These students compete in the Udergraduate Rsearch Competition in March. Come August, next year’s seniors can enter these projects in the Marketing Congress and in November junior and senior students will attempt to make a business out of these projects through the Engineering Entrepreneurship course which the College is offering for the first time this school year, in partnership with the College of Business Administration.

The National Engineering Center is the research and extension arm of the College. The College of Engineering and the National Engineering Center comprise the National Graduate School of Engineering (NGSE). The implementation of the NGSE is being lobbied by the College in Congress and in the Senate. In the next 10 years, the NGSE will need P5.5B for infrastructure, scholarships, faculty development and research grants.

There are numerous programs and events in the College each year. Each month of the school year we have the Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series in cooperation with the UP Alumni Engineers. Every January, we have the Career Assistance Program for Engineering Students (CAPES), from August to September we have the Marketing Congress and the Engineering Week is slated in December. The Online Resume Repository of Engineering contains the resume of our graduates.

The following highlights the developments in each of the 9 Departments of the College. (Click here for the complete report)
